The Cortonesi winery is a family-owned winery in Montalcino. Today, Tommaso, Marco and Giulio continue the winemaking work according to tradition, while employing modern technologies to the enhance the quality of their production. The philosophy of the winery has always been characterized by a double paradigm. On one hand: the importance of the family history: their own roots and family teachings - respecting traditions and the purity of Sangiovese - that have become fundamental principles of the work of the winery. On the other hand: continuously studying and improving vine-growing and wine-making techniques while looking to the future.

Cortonesi owns some of the most prized vineyards in the north and south-east of Montalcino. “The La Mannella site is located near Montosoli in the northern half of the appellation with gravel and clay Galestro soils. The Poggiarelli vineyard, which made a beautiful single vineyard wine in 2016, comes from the southern half of the appellation near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, and here the Galestro soils are loose. “There’s no soil here, only rocks!” says winemaker Marco Cortonesi.” - Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Nov/2020

Since 1998 wines from these two areas have been vinified separately. Marco understood the importance of separating the grapes from these two different terroirs, to underline their characteristics and peculiarities of each, and to fully show the full potential of the territory of Montalcino. The soil composition in fact, consisting of clay and sandstone at La Mannella, rocky and rich in marl for Il Poggiarelli, made wines with scents, tastes, and sensations completely different from each other.
