With vineyards dating back to the early 1900’s, Bodega Sierra Norte has been growing grapes and cultivating vines in Eastern Spain for three generations. Located in the DO of Utiel-Requena, in the province of Valencia, Bodega Sierra Norte crafts their delicious Pasion de Bobal line from a truly Spanish grape, growing on vines as old as 60 years.
Located in the Northwest corner of the Utiel-Requena region, Camporrobles borders the province of Cuenca at an altitude of 940m above sea level. With mountains surrounding the vineyards the site benefits from a unique micro-climate, experiencing intense diurnal temperature swings that can range twenty degrees Celsius from day to night. This beneficial temperature variation is aided further by the Mediterranean currents cooling the vines during the intense sunlight of the day. The natural surrounding ecosystem further supports the Bobal vines with run-off water provided from the nearby Cabriel river, helping to reduce man-made irrigation. The Bobal vines, all of which are older than 40 years, are planted in limestone rich soil and trained in the Cordon Royat method.
From the outset, reasoned cultivation that respects the soil, plants, and the vineyard’s defense agents (predator insects, antagonists from certain vine harming fungi) was considered to be an inherent part of the family’s philosophy and success. Certified organic since 2000, Bodega Sierra Norte puts a strong emphasis on sustainable farming with optimum use of the natural surrounding resources. In addition to being extremely environment conscious, Bodega Sierra Norte continually looks to innovate and develop new techniques to help produce the best wine possible. A new research and development department has been established boasting a fully equipped modern laboratory and experimental vine plots. Bodega Sierra Norte frequently collaborates with the University of Valencia and the Centre for Technological and Industrial Development (CDTI), believing that the sharing of knowledge is paramount to the success and growth of the wine industry.
