Bierzo, Spain

The winery is situated in Cacabelos on the road to Villafranca del Bierzo. This location, in the centre of a triangle formed by Cacabelos, Villafranca and Toral de los Vados, allows the best possible access to the production zone of most of the quality grapes produced in Bierzo.

Aiming to make an elegant new wave Bierzo wine, Losada Vinos de Finca boldly sought out old Bierzo vineyards traditionally planted on clay soils, a terroir which had been relatively overlooked by the Bierzo’s new wave.
As a result, Losada was established on the outskirts of the village of Pieros, on the St James pilgrimage route, midway between Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo.
The company also owns vineyard plots mainly planted on clay soils around Valtuille de Arriba, where grapes for Altos de Losada are produced.

More Info

Mencia grapes are selected from vineyards located in different areas of Bierzo where careful vine-growing, the right altitude and good exposure enable perfect ripening of the grapes. The vineyards are planted in different soil-types, most of which are either made up of fragmented slate (such as in Campo and Molinaseca) or clay (as in Valtuille and Villadecanes).

"Pristine and fruity with spiced dark cherries, white pepper and some flowers. A medium- to full-bodied mencia with juicy berries and dark cherries supported by fresh, tight tannins. Drink now."

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Aug/2023

"The eponymous red 2021 Losada was produced with Mencía and 2% Jerez (Palomino) and 1% Godello from ripe grapes that achieved 13.9% alcohol while keeping balance and freshness. It matured in barriques (10% of them new) and 2,000-liter oak foudres for 12 months, and the wine has some creaminess and notes of spicy oak but is quite integrated and seamless. It gives very spicy flavors and some dusty tannins that would welcome food. 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023."

"Good intensity. Hatched wild berries, citrus pulp, licorice and crushed flower. Peat, pepper and earthy sensation accompanied by leather in the background. Dense in the mouth, tasty and fruity. With notes of cinnamon, cumin, and cocoa. Also in its feel. Long."

"Lithe and lively, this red shows a core of fresh black cherry flavors, backed by licorice, cocoa and light leafy notes. Light tannins and fresh acidity are balanced, giving way to floral and mineral details on the finish. Drink now through 2022. 10,000 cases made."

Editor's Choice "Ripe, fleshy, minerally blackberry and black-cherry aromas are pure, deep and suggest high quality that's confirmed later on. In the mouth, this Mencia from an excellent vintage is racy and pumped up, with acidic energy and tannic grab. Roasted black-fruit flavors come with notes of spice cake and salt. A long, full finish confirms how good this is; drink through 2022."

Gismondi on Wine, Sept/2017

2015 -

"This my kind of big, red wine, rich and juicy but mineral laden and full of red fruits. It's rich and warm with meaty, smoky, savoury notes. The palate is big and warm but juicy with spicy, vanilla, savoury, black cherry, plum, smoky tobacco and licorice flavours. A blockbuster red you should decant and serve with roasted meats. My choice would be a leg of lamb."

Robert Parker's the Wine Advocate, Apr/2016

2013 -

"They reduced the amount of oak for the 2013 Losada, trying to show more the Mencea character in the wine. The nose denotes more freshness, it doesn't seem as concentrated as in previous vintages, and the palate also shows better balance. I like the direction this cuvee is going within the house style. There were 92,428 bottles and 300 magnums produced."

"This wine's ripe berry aromas are tinged with schisty minerality while showing restrained oaky scents of coconut and vanilla. It's saturated, firm pallete features big tannins, tomato, plum, baking spice and coffee flavors and a dark, toasty finish."
