More Info

Bodegas Ateca is based in the village of Ateca, in the province of Zaragoza, fourteen Km away from Calatayud. Old vines of Garnacha are planted on the hillsides at about 3,000 ft above sea level. There is a range of soil types throughout the region, however most vineyards could be described as having gravely clay loams. The clay is at depth and allows for the vines to obtain moisture and be dry grown even though there is very little rainfall in the region.

"Rich and slightly sweet, this opulent red is on the edge of excess, the alcohol showing a little on the smooth and bright finish. Drink now or in 2019."

"Broad and plush in texture, this red delivers ripe boysenberry and red plum flavors, with notes of anise, rhubarb, nutmeg and toast. Light tannins and gentle acidity give this modest grip. Drink now through 2021. 5,500 cases made."

Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, Jun/2017

2015 -

"The riper and headier 2015 Atteca has 0.5% more alcohol than the 2014, hitting the scales at 15.5%, which shows the wine reflecting the character of the year. It matured in oak barrels for some ten months. It's a ripe, full-bodied and powerful Garnacha representing the character of the year quite faithfully. This is one for a winter stew or similar powerful food. Still a little oaky for my taste... 66,000 bottles produced."

"A lovely red with ripe cherries, currants, plums and hints of slate. Medium body, soft tannins and a long, warm and focused finish. From 100% garnacha. Drink now."

"(aged for 10 months in new and used French oak barrels) Opaque ruby. Cherry cola, blueberry, candied licorice and incense on the deeply perfumed nose. Coats the palate with sappy black and blue fruit liqueur flavors that are energized by suggestions of peppery spices and a suave floral pastille quality. Appealingly sweet and nicely concentrated, finishing with repeating dark berry character and smooth, fine-grained tannins."

Gismondi on Wine, Mar/2018

2014 -

"Bodegas Ateca is based in Ateca, Zaragoza, fourteen kilometers from Calatayud. The slate soiled, higher elevation vineyard is made up mainly of small parcels of old vine garnacha. Ripe red fruit, supple leather and mulberry fill this dense garnacha, with tea leaves, balsamic, orange rind spicing the thick, slow palate. Tannins are chewy and the finish crusted with pink pepper. This spent ten months in French oak, which is felt on the lengthy, toasty finish."

Culinaire Magazine, Tom Firth, Aug/2016

"Spain is a solid choice for summertime red wine, but also a star when it comes to pairing with grilled meats, pork, or something a little spicy. Sourced from old vines, there is plenty of complexity on nose and palate, with raspberry and earthy cherry fruits, loads of spice and a savoury character that just begs for food."
