Bodegas Ateca is based in the village of Ateca, in the province of Zaragoza, fourteen Km away from Calatayud. Old vines of Garnacha are planted on the hillsides at about 3,000 ft above sea level. There is a range of soil types throughout the region, however most vineyards could be described as having gravely clay loams. The clay is at depth and allows for the vines to obtain moisture and be dry grown even though there is very little rainfall in the region.

"Rich yet fresh nose, exuding spiced strawberries, violets and brambly cherries and blueberries. Fresh and juicy palate with supple, round tannins and excellent length. Well made and fresh. A very good reference for Calatayud garnacha. Drink now."
2019 -
"Aromas of blackberries, black cherries, chocolate, wet leaves and dried herbs. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins and a juicy black-fruited palate. Ripe and mellow with a flavorful, fruity finish. Drink now."

"Wines seem to be quite regular here, and the 2019 Atteca, a pure Garnacha from old vines bottled at 15% alcohol, feels quite similar to the 2018 I tasted next to it. It matured in French oak barrels for 10 months, and it takes some time to absorb the oak, which was still quite evident here with abundant spice and smoke and some tannins that need resolving and/or powerful food. 78,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020."
2018 -
"Deep, vivid ruby. Lively and perfumed on the nose, displaying ripe red fruit, lavender and spice aromas and a hint of smokiness. Supple and open-knit, offering concentrated, appealingly sweet cherry, black raspberry and candied licorice flavors that become spicier as the wine opens up. Finishes long, smooth and juicy, with resonating floral and red fruit notes and well-integrated tannins."

"The 2018 Atteca feels more harmonious and fresher than the 2019 I tasted next to it, despite both having similar alcohol levels (15%) and almost the same acidity and pH parameters. One extra year in bottle has polished the tannins, and the cooler, even if more challenging year seems to have given it an extra spark. It's still a full-bodied and powerful Garnacha that can handle powerful food. 72,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2019."

"Grenache (or Garnacha as it’s known in Spain) is one of the greats, and is best known in Spain and parts of France for polished, spicy reds that aren’t too heavy on the palate. Here, deep raspberry fruits with subtle strawberry characters, dried herb and a touch of jamminess on the nose move into an intense, fruit driven, but spicy and not too tannic flavour profile. Loving the acids, and balance, and this would really shine with pork sausage, cured meats, or ribs – saucy, beautiful ribs."

"Plum, currant, loamy earth and cola flavors mingle in this generous red. Firm tannins and crisp acidity support the broad texture. The spicy finish shows a touch of heat. Drink now through 2023. 5,500 cases made, 2,800 cases imported."
2017 -
"The 2017 Atteca feels more structured than the 2016 I tasted next to it, but at the same time a little riper and perhaps with a more hurried ripening cycle, so the 2016 felt more complete and balanced. This feels younger, and the oak is a little more evident too. This is not a shy wine with 15.5% alcohol. 66,000 bottles produced."

"The riper and headier 2015 Atteca has 0.5% more alcohol than the 2014, hitting the scales at 15.5%, which shows the wine reflecting the character of the year. It matured in oak barrels for some ten months. It's a ripe, full-bodied and powerful Garnacha representing the character of the year quite faithfully. This is one for a winter stew or similar powerful food. Still a little oaky for my taste... 66,000 bottles produced."

"A lovely red with ripe cherries, currants, plums and hints of slate. Medium body, soft tannins and a long, warm and focused finish. From 100% garnacha. Drink now."
2014 -
"(aged for 10 months in new and used French oak barrels) Opaque ruby. Cherry cola, blueberry, candied licorice and incense on the deeply perfumed nose. Coats the palate with sappy black and blue fruit liqueur flavors that are energized by suggestions of peppery spices and a suave floral pastille quality. Appealingly sweet and nicely concentrated, finishing with repeating dark berry character and smooth, fine-grained tannins."

"Bodegas Ateca is based in Ateca, Zaragoza, fourteen kilometers from Calatayud. The slate soiled, higher elevation vineyard is made up mainly of small parcels of old vine garnacha. Ripe red fruit, supple leather and mulberry fill this dense garnacha, with tea leaves, balsamic, orange rind spicing the thick, slow palate. Tannins are chewy and the finish crusted with pink pepper. This spent ten months in French oak, which is felt on the lengthy, toasty finish."

"Spain is a solid choice for summertime red wine, but also a star when it comes to pairing with grilled meats, pork, or something a little spicy. Sourced from old vines, there is plenty of complexity on nose and palate, with raspberry and earthy cherry fruits, loads of spice and a savoury character that just begs for food."
